A straight comparison of the five regions we plan trips for, and who each one is genuinely right for.
Philippines — the most spectacular
Bacuit Bay and Coron have no equal for karst scenery and wreck diving. It is also the hardest logistically: internal flights, long vans and weather-dependent crossings. Best for divers and adventurous travellers.
Thailand — the best value
One ferry corridor, cheap tickets, accommodation at every price point and excellent food. Best for first-timers and anyone travelling on a budget. Crowds at Phi Phi and Maya Bay are the trade-off.
Indonesia — the most varied
Temples, volcano treks, manta rays and car-free islands within two hours of each other. Best for travellers who want more than beaches. Bali's traffic is the one genuine frustration.
Caribbean — the most luxurious
Short flights, exceptional resorts and the Grenadines' sailing grounds. Best for honeymoons and sailing trips, and the most expensive region by a wide margin.
