Bali is the hub, not the destination. Within two hours of its east coast sit Nusa Penida's cliffs, the car-free Gili Islands and Lombok's surf beaches and volcano — a compact, high-contrast route that works well in ten to fourteen days.

Fast boats leave from Sanur and Padangbai. Sanur serves Nusa Lembongan and Penida; Padangbai serves the Gilis and Lombok. Morning departures are calmer and far less likely to be cancelled.

Nusa Penida's roads are genuinely rough. Hire a driver for the west-coast viewpoints rather than a scooter unless you are an experienced rider.

Manta Point off Penida and the Gili turtle sites are the marine highlights; Mount Rinjani on Lombok is a serious two- to three-day trek that needs to be planned around, not squeezed in.
